Submitted by Herbert Richards

Elijah Britton Ashurst, an ordained Baptist Minister, was my maternal grandfather.  He united with the Bethel Baptist Church, located near Bath, by letter on February 3, 1899, receiving his ordainment on September 21, 1902.  He later moved his membership to the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Medora, Macoupin County, Illinois, where he continued to preach until his death.

He married Sarah Elizabeth Hare in 1876 in Mason County, Illinois.  After her death he married Ida May Scott.  His third wife was Martha McCammon.

His children were:  Jennie B, Polly C, Minnie Mae, Jessie, Lonnie G, Johnny Britton, Laura Belle, Logan C, and Sarah E.

More on Elijah Ashurst's Ministry (also from Herbert Richards)

Elijah Ashurst was a member of the Snicarte Baptist Church for a number of years preceding his transfer to Bethel Baptist Church on February 3, 1899.  During this period he was just a faithful member of the church.  Elijah was ordained as a Baptist Minister on September 21, 1902 and he served as the pastor there for about 18 years.  About 1921 he relocated his service to the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Medora, IL and returned to the Bethel Baptist Church on various occasions to preach.  He had returned to preach the Sunday sermon at Bethel Baptist Church on November 13, 1922 just one week prior to his death on November 22, 1922.

Elijah Ashurst was an old time preacher who believed in clean pure gospel and he practiced living his life the same way.  He was instrumental in leading numerous members of his congregation to accept Christ as their savior and he also conducted many baptizings during his tenure as a Baptist Minister.

This information is listed in his obituary which was written by Rev. G C Gross who gave the sermon at Elijah Ashurst's funeral.  I have a copy of this obituary in my personal file.  I also obtained some information on Elijah from my late mother, Sarah Elizabeth Ashurst.
